My proudest moment is becoming an American citizen, and I believe every immigrant kid deserves the same shot that this country gave me.

California has more immigrants than any other state, adding to our beautiful and diverse cultures and communities.

We need a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented folks who are a part of our nation. These are not just DREAMers, but grandparents, fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles and dear friends. This must be a priority and there’s no time to waste. The United States is built by immigrants, and we need to ensure we create pathways to citizenship for the workers and families who keep this country running.

But right now, there are conservative forces supporting racist candidates who want to deport families, make it harder to become a citizen, and continue building Trump’s wall.

In Congress, I will fight hard to expand pathways to citizenship for undocumented residents and fight to end legal discrimination against undocumented residents.

While mayor, I worked to establish the Justice Fund in Long Beach to provide legal support for families facing deportation. Long Beach also became a Sanctuary City under my leadership and has provided sanctuary protections for undocumented residents.

We are a nation – and state – of immigrants. In Congress, I will continue to fight for immigrants and create equal opportunities for citizenship.
