As Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine causes gas prices to rise, I know families in Maryland, and across the country, are worried about how higher fuel costs will impact their family budgets.

It’s still too early to tell how the global oil market will adjust to the disruptions of Putin’s war and the measures we can take to ease the price squeeze. Here in Maryland, the budget cushion from the American Rescue Plan funds is enabling our state to suspend its .36 cent per gallon gas tax to lower prices at the pump.

But the truth is that as exceptional as the current situation is, we’ve been here before. For decades, our dependence on big oil has left us vulnerable to external factors that cause extreme price fluctuations.

So if one thing is clear, it's that now is the time for us to use every tool at our disposal to insulate Americans from rising gasoline prices — and take critical steps to end our dependence on fossil fuels for good.

That's why I am calling on President Biden to enact his clean energy plan now. It's what we need to lower energy costs for Americans over the long term. And it's what we need to tackle the climate crisis and save our livable planet.

That's why I was proud to support President Biden's infrastructure plan, which invests in improving public transit systems, building out a national network of electric vehicle chargers, and more.

Overwhelming evidence points to the fact that the impacts of climate change are already here and time is running out for us to take meaningful action. And now, Putin’s war should be another wake-up call.
