Happy International Women’s Day, everybody!

While we take this day to reflect on women around the world who have overcome insurmountable obstacles and forged a path to progress for future generations, we must also look ahead to all we have yet to accomplish.

From our nation’s beginning, women have had to fight for our place in democracy. We fought tirelessly for generations to secure the right to own property, to receive an education, and later, to vote. In 2022, it’s easy to say that our nation has come a long way. In reality, women of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community have often been unjustly excluded from this movement toward equality — and it’s been a detriment to our communities.

Living as a woman in the United States cannot be generalized to one singular experience. As social, cultural, economic, and racial influences uniquely shape the individual lives of women in our commonwealth, it’s imperative that we stand in solidarity with our sisters.

We must listen to each others’ stories, connect on the issues that unite us, and elect leaders who reflect the backgrounds and experiences of the people who will be impacted by their decisions. When women stand united, there is no change too great for us to achieve.

Though we still have so much work to do, I know that Pennsylvania is full of fighters, leaders, and changemakers who are working every day to make our district’s future a brighter one. This International Women’s Day, I encourage you to take a moment and celebrate the women in your own circles who are continuing this fight toward equality for all women.

Onward,

Senator Lindsey Williams
