Vladimir Putin is continuing his years-long campaign against freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Russia -- now, by silencing independent journalists who are reporting on the awful crimes being committed against the people of Ukraine.
This interference in critical public-awareness journalism is yet another mark of Putin’s authoritarianism -- and his desperation to feed his own personal power and ego at any cost.
Enshrined in both our Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, press freedom is a core American value that we must constantly promote around the globe.
That’s why I introduced the International Press Freedom Act , a bipartisan bill to promote global press freedom, fund programs that keep foreign journalists safe, and create a new visa category to allow threatened journalists to come to the U.S.
Passage of this legislation would let journalists all around the world know that America will help protect their right to report, and offer safe harbor when they are threatened.
