Dear friends,

This week I've been reflecting on President Biden’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

I was incredibly touched by the central theme of the night: unity. We’re at a critical point in our national and international history right now, and it’s on all of us – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike – to end the divisiveness and address these challenges together.

One urgent threat we’re facing right now is the rise of authoritarianism abroad. I’m proud to stand with the brave people of Ukraine who are fighting for their freedom. And in the halls of Congress, I am steadfast in my support of more aid, arms and sanctions to weaken Putin and isolate him and his enablers from the world. As Americans, we must stand in solidarity against a dangerous dictator invading a sovereign, peaceful, democratic country.

In addition to the crisis in Ukraine, President Biden presented his vision for how we as a nation can and should move forward to address the needs of working class Americans. We've already gotten started laying the groundwork for this vision by passing the American Rescue Plan to get more than 215 million Americans vaccinated and create 6.4 million jobs. The President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is sending unprecedented federal investments to our home state of Massachusetts to rebuild our roads and bridges, clean up our drinking water, and expand broadband.

Although the numbers indicate a strong economic recovery, families are still feeling the squeeze on their wallets because of the COVID-19 pandemic and energy prices. That’s real, and it’s something we have to address if we’re going to truly create an economy where every person and small business is able to succeed. We’re going to get to work immediately on the policies the President outlined: lowering out-of-pocket costs for families on prescription drugs, utilities, and child care; creating jobs by restoring our manufacturing sector and “Making it in America”; addressing the opioid and mental health crises; and delivering for our veterans and servicemembers who have sacrificed more than we could imagine to defend our freedoms.

Friends, the road ahead may not be an easy one. But it’s a journey that we will continue along together. Whether it’s standing up to threats to democracy abroad and at home, or fighting tooth-and-nail to protect working families and seniors from the worst effects of the pandemic, I’m dedicated to building a better America.

Stay well,
Lori Trahan
