Today is Election Day in Texas’ 30th District. Jessica and her team have spent months and months working towards this moment.

Now feels like the right moment to be vulnerable and transparent about what might happen tonight.

This is long, but please read this in its entirety if you can...

I’m going to tell you my deepest fear, something that very few people in politics would care to admit on Election Day:

I’m terrified that we will get crushed. I’m not just worried we may lose. I’m worried that we might get pummeled. I’m scared we aren’t going to come anywhere close to where we want to be, that we will let down Jessica, that we will let down our supporters.

Are we confident in the strength of our campaign? Yes, absolutely. But there were so many factors working against us, that we can never be sure. So our natural reaction is to assume our worst fears.

The truth is that Jessica’s campaign could not afford to conduct a poll. We simply did not have $25,000 to spare. (Yes, you read that right.) Instead, we were honest, clear, and bold in our positions from day one. 

We weren’t backed by a $2M dark money super PAC like our opponent. We did not play her games. Yes, we are talking about Jasmine Crockett, our opponent who we out-fundraised $51 at a time.

Unlike Jasmine, we put our heads down, did the work, and used our limited resources effectively. We pushed as hard as we could, even when others let their foot off of the gas because their wealthy funders picked up their slack.

Our opponent drives a car that is more expensive than the median income in the district… She’s not for universal healthcare, she’s not for forgiving student loan debt, not for a Green New Deal, and the list goes on. None of this is a secret.

But money and corruption talks, and she’s got a huge advantage.

Let’s compare this with Jessica:

Jessica’s campaign was fueled by $280,000 from 5,500 individual contributions with an average donation amount of $51.

Read that again.

This campaign was led by a young, a queer brown campaign manager, a young Taiwanese digital director, and a band of 20 year olds who fought tooth-and-nail to lift up Jessica and her message.

Kavin. Eden. Megan. Annie. Carson. Belén. Jeremiah. Sierra. Andrew. Jack. Misael. Sean.

These are the names of the people who were inspired by Jessica Mason to fight the good fight. This team looks like the goddamn United Nations, and we are so proud of that. We are showing the country -- one race at a time -- that politics is for everyone.

Politics is for Jessica, a daughter of South Dallas who grew up in poverty.
Politics is for fearless Black women who beat the drum and inspire us to be better.
Politics is for the daughter of a teamster truck driver.
Politics is for the little girl struggling with asthma, whose mom cannot afford her inhaler.
Politics is for the young person wandering into the military recruiting office in search of a brighter future.
Politics is for young, gay, brown men campaign managers born to poor immigrants in Queens.
Politics is for women adopted from Taiwan.
Politics is for people who have been pushed so far outside of the system they cannot see a way in.

So even if we lose, we can know we courageously stuck to our values. We stood up against the swamp, we took it head on. We rattled the cage. We sent a strong message to groups in Washington who spend millions in races for corrupt gain. They’re on notice, and they know it.

We followed our leader and stood tall. When things got hard, we came out swinging, and we won’t let our foot off the gas until the last person in line has voted.

If we lose, it’s because we rejected the swamp ecosystem that holds back South Dallas. Period, point blank.

Thank god that’s not Jessica, who has been loud and clear about what she believes in since she launched her campaign. We can sleep tonight knowing we said what we meant, and we meant what we said.

If we aren’t victorious, we aren’t backing down from telling the truth and living our values.

It takes 100 tries to get just 1 great leader across the finish line in this country. So if we aren’t victorious, we are going to continue doing the work of breaking barriers and keep it moving. This is why Barrier To Entry exists.

We know it’s worth it. We saw it with Peter and Ed and Shenise in 2021. 

Peter brought solar panels to Galesburg. Shenise brought police reform to Dayton. Ed brought affordable housing to Pittsburgh. The impact of this work reverberates city to city, from coast to coast.

We have given this everything. Absolutely everything. We stretched your dollars as far as we could. We did right by you. We thought of you every step of the way, and felt you with us.

So for the next couple hours, I’m shoving that fear aside. I'm going to choose joy and hope. I’ll save the righteous indignation for another time.
