Message from NARAL President Mini Timmaraju
On Friday, President Biden announced that he will nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. This is a joyous and overdue milestone, and we applaud the president for nominating the first Black woman to the Court.
Confirming Judge Jackson is a crucial opportunity to shape the Supreme Court in the decades to come. This is a critical step towards realizing a future where all of our families and communities thrive and towards ensuring equal justice for all of us. Unfortunately, her confirmation will not change the outcome of the Court's looming decision in Jackson Women’s Health Organization v. Dobbs, a case that could spell the end of Roe v. Wade.
Even as Roe stands, it’s moot in my home state of Texas, where SB 8—an unconstitutional, vigilante-enforced abortion ban—has pushed abortion almost entirely out of reach for millions of Texans since it went into effect nearly six months ago. What’s happening in Texas is a grim preview of what may happen on a bigger scale if Roe falls and more than half of the states move to ban abortion.
It is abundantly clear that Roe isn’t and has never been enough. We need a legislative solution—and that solution is the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), a bill that would safeguard the right to abortion even if Roe falls.
The Senate will hold a vote to advance WHPA TOMORROW. Time is of the essence and each one of our senators needs to hear from us right now.
We’re going all in and we need you with us. We were made for moments like these.
