Hey {FIRST NAME},
My first salaried job was at a small anti-war organization in DC. We encouraged people across progressive movements to imagine what a world without war could look like. Without three quarters of a trillion dollars being pumped into the war machine and with the right political pressure, our schools could be fully funded, universal healthcare could be a reality, homelessness could be ended, higher education could be free. And we could end the climate crisis.
The situation in Ukraine is heart wrenching and terrifying. There’s no sugar coating it. And at the same time, is a clear illustration of how all of our social justice issues are linked. It’s critical that we do our homework and understand why standing up against this conflict and fighting war at all costs is a central part of climate justice.
Militarism is a driving force for climate change. Beyond the fact that the US military is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world, there’s no denying that military conflict in the 21st century has always been influenced by energy security and a deadly dependence on fossil fuels. And making rich people a helluva lot richer.
We’ve pulled together a resource kit, highlighting the voices of Ukrainian people, to support folks working for climate to feel equipped to show up with folks working tirelessly to put an end to this horrific situation and end war once and for all.
Here’s a downloadable PDF resource toolkit listing out anti-war and anti-imperialist resources, support needs, and general information that highlight Ukrainian voices:
