Without a course correction, Democrats could be headed for major losses -- endangering their Congressional majorities and control of state and local offices across the country.

That could remove crucial checks on the worst trends taking hold in the GOP today. As Mike writes: "a healthy and vibrant Democratic Party remains essential to beating back the Republican Party's dangerous turn toward authoritarianism and its tolerance for election subversion."

To get back on track, Democrats need to move away from culture war debates and start solving more immediate problems. Indeed, one of the driving issues in the San Francisco recalls was the choice to prioritize the removal of problematic names from schools, rather than putting a full focus on getting students back in the classroom.

"Democrats want leaders who have the backbone to stand tall and take the political hits that come with being a practical problem-solver," says Mike.
