Dear friend,

Making Pennsylvania a state where everyone can live and thrive means cutting the red tape that stands in the way of a brighter future.

Last June, we heard testimonies from trans community members that shined a light on the costly, time-consuming, and unnecessary burdens faced by gender non-conforming Pennsylvanians. My Democratic colleagues and I learned just how onerous name change proceedings and other discriminatory practices really are.

That’s why we got to work with the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus to release a package of bills aimed at lifting the legal barriers that prevent trans and gender-nonconforming Pennsylvanians from living as their authentic selves. Among these bills include legislation that would:

* Remove the gender designation from Pennsylvania’s birth certificates.

* End legal publication requirements for name change proceedings and seal the records related to them, while creating a faster name changing process.

* Provide state grant money, through the Department of Community & Economic Development, to transgender Pennsylvanians seeking to change their names.

This package will provide a necessary overhaul to an outdated system that has failed to serve trans Pennsylvanians for too long. I’m grateful for the members of our community who shared their testimonies and helped us fight for this important step toward progress.

Though there are still important things to be done in the road to equality, I’m fighting in Harrisburg every day so that all Pennsylvanians can enjoy a high quality of life. Will you stand with me and my colleagues in this important work? [[link removed]]

Friend, when we elect legislators who listen to our communities with open hearts and a desire to understand, we’re able to make real, meaningful change in the lives of Pennsylvanians.

I hope you’ll stand with me as I continue this fight for our LGBTQIA+ brothers, sisters, and siblings — in 2022 and beyond.

In solidarity,
Senator Lindsey Williams
