Happy Black History Month!
I’m excited to celebrate another Black History Month and recognize the history and accomplishments of the Black community in San Francisco and across the United States.
For me, this month brings up fond memories of my childhood. My mother always encouraged reading in our home, and she would often read Black authors to me. That pride in Black success and representation is the essence of Black History Month.
While we’re celebrating during a renewed period of pandemic caution, I want to encourage you to find safe ways to honor Black excellence and support Black businesses. This Black History Month, support a local Black restaurant or business [[link removed]] or Black-focused community organizations.
During our celebrations, it’s important to honor all the work that has been done to fight for civil rights. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, fighting against the oppression of slavery, the disenfranchisement of Jim Crow, and the injustice of police brutality.
Black history is American history and it is happening 365 days a year, not just the 28 days of February. We must be vocal and unapologetic in our fight for equity. Not just today, not just in February, but every day and month of the year.
We still have much work to do in San Francisco. We need to prioritize action over talk when it comes to standing up for Black residents. We need to continue to develop solutions to housing affordability, offer economic opportunity, and invest in our public school system. I am grateful to count you in this fight as we journey toward progress.
