The money in politics can be nauseating at times. I’ve been reading through the 4 th quarter FEC reports and my jaw is almost on the floor.
Where is all this money coming from, and better question, where does it all go??? We sure as hell don't see very much of it!
Special interest groups, corporate PACS, lobbyists, and of course the occasional overzealous billionaire that wants to control the world are pouring BILLIONS of dollars into politics – and those are just the contributions we know about.
Countless more dollars are changing hands through shadowy dark-money groups that aren’t subject to the same donation caps and reporting requirements as a PAC like No Dem Left Behind.
I’ve got to tell you, what these reports do to the morale of grassroots campaigns and organizations like ours is crippling.
Not only do we get an inside look at our opposition and the endless resources that they have, but then we have to turn to our supporters and ask them for help, and all they see is news headlines about the billions of dollars political groups raised this quarter, so they think “Why should I give you my hard-earned $5 when you have millions in the bank already?”
Well, the truth is, we DON’T! I really wish we did – with that kind of money, we could support more candidates running in rural America and knock on a hell of a lot more doors.
I won’t lie, I’d love for No Dem Left Behind to raise millions of dollars every quarter. We’d be able to elevate dozens more rural candidates and thousands more grassroots activists.
I hope we’ll get there someday. But in the meantime, we’re grateful that we have something even more powerful and meaningful than a big check from some billionaire – and that’s the support of folks like you.
It may be frustrating to see the disparity between our funding and our opposition’s, but I’d rather grow this organization the right way -- $5 or $10 or $25 at a time from the working-class people we’re fighting for – than to sell out to some special interest group or industrial titan who wants to dictate who we can endorse and what we’re allowed to talk about.
But fundraising the right way is really, really tough. There are days I’m tempted to throw in the towel (like when I’m reading FEC quarterly reports). We have to constantly ask, ask, ask our supporters for money, and I’ll tell you a secret: We get just as tired of asking as you get tired of being asked.
That’s why I’m going to ask you for a favor, one that I think will help both of us – would you consider committing to a small MONTHLY donation to No Dem Left Behind? [[link removed]]
If everyone reading this email gave just $5 a month, that would mean $150,000 a month in funding, or $1.8 million a year. At $10 a month, we’d have $300,000 a month, or $3.6 million a year. At just $1 more than that, $11 a month, we’d reach the $1-million-a-quarter mark. That’s still small potatoes compared to a lot of groups, but it’s a LOT more than we bring in now.
As effective as No Dem Left Behind has been with our relatively small budget, we could do SO MUCH more if every one of our supporters made a modest monthly financial commitment. We’d be able to hire more staff, train and fund more rural activists, run more persuasion advertising, and support more great Democratic candidates in rural America.
Perhaps even more importantly, we’d be able to spend a lot less time writing fundraising emails and more time doing the important organizing work No Dem Left Behind was created to do … meaning your inbox would have a lot fewer appeals from us for help.
