Big things are happening on Capitol Hill, John.
According to Bloomberg, members of congress are petitioning to form a union which would give legislative employees collective bargaining power for protection with diversity, Covid-19 protocols, sexual harassment, and low pay.
Some of these members are getting paid as low as $29,000 annually to live and work in D.C., one of the most expensive cities in the United States of America.
Democratic leaders, like Pelosi and Schumer, are *finally* publicly stating their support for this because they are finally feeling the pressure to care for our Party’s own workers.
When we give workers— including political workers— the opportunity to unionize and make liveable wages, we provide critical tools for people in a system that already favors the elite. When we recognize that people without college degrees from private colleges, too, can work in politics, that means our policies have to change with it.
Republican leaders will try to shut this down— it’s just what they do. Now more than ever, it’s critical Democrats can hold the House to pass key legislation centered around protecting workers.
If we don’t win in 2022 – if we lose the Senate and the House – we’re forfeiting so many opportunities that are starting to come to fruition in Washington. I hope you realize how big of a moment this is, John. We’re going to get democrats elected across the country to make sure that this bill is the first of many that supports equal opportunity for all.
