On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump used lies and conspiracy theories to incite a violent attack on the United States Capitol.

Unfortunately, Trump and his allies -- including here in Washington state -- are continuing to spread his Big Lie: that we can't trust our democracy to accurately count votes.

This rhetoric isn't just untrue -- it's dangerous. That's why I strongly support SB 5843, which would make it illegal for elected officials or candidates for office to knowingly spread lies about election results.

To get this crucial bill through the legislature, we'll all need to speak out. Will you add your name right now in support of this legislation that will hold politicians accountable for maliciously lying about the result of an election?

January 6 was not an isolated incident -- nor was it limited to the nation's capital. Here in the other Washington on that day, I was forced to leave my house in Olympia after anti-democracy protestors gathered on my front lawn.

This ongoing effort to undermine our democracy and incite violence exists right here in Washington state. In fact, just last summer, three Republican state lawmakers used taxpayer dollars to attend a "symposium on election fraud," which peddled dangerous and debunked conspiracy theories.

Just like there are consequences for lying under oath, I believe there should be consequences for willfully lying about election results. The bill would make doing so in Washington state a gross misdemeanor.

But before I can sign this legislation into law and hold the politicians and elected officials who are endangering our democracy accountable, we have to get this bill through the legislature.
