Here in the Midwest, we had a snow day today, so many of us with young children had the "pleasure" of virtual learning again. If you've been a parent during the pandemic, you probably know what that means. It means I spent half my day chasing my son down and trying to get him to sit still and follow along with his teacher, and the other half trying to make sure his younger sister didn't wreak TOO much havoc in the playroom. Oh, and I was also trying to run a federal PAC at the same time. It might sound like I'm complaining, but I'm really not. These are the kind of days where I really get to put everything in perspective and count my blessings. For one thing, I live in an area where internet connection is not a problem, so I can still work and my kids can still attend school when the weather (or a global pandemic) keeps us home. Millions of Americans -- including some of our staff here at No Dem Left Behind -- who live in rural areas do not have that luxury. The disparity in connectivity between urban/suburban and rural America is growing daily, and it's way past time for our country to invest in the infrastructure needed to close the gap. Another blessing: My kids have plenty of healthy snacks to eat (although it seems they got into the freezer when I was busy and ate some of those Smuckers PB&J sandwiches instead -- I've found 3 wrappers so far). Many children in our country do not have access to enough healthy food, and in the richest, most prosperous country in the world, that really is a dark stain on all of us. Those $300-dollar-a-month tax credit checks went a long way toward lifting kids out of hunger, and we must bring them back. (That policy was supported by Republicans, by the way, including Senator Mitt Romney, but we all know who put a halt to that program.) Anyway, today is one of those days that reminds me how much fun snow days were as a kid, but now that I am older, I can't help but think about just how difficult snow days are for parents who can't take time off or work from home, or whose kids will go hungry because they won't get school breakfast and lunch today, and the difficult decisions they face. We have to even the playing field, we have to support policies that give everyday Americans better choices when it comes to keeping their kids safe, warm, fed and cared for. The way I see it, my job is to get people elected that support those policies. Your job is to help. :-) Stay Warm, Hassan
