News from AHC Inc. l January 2022 Developing affordable homes and helping communities thrive since 1975. MLK Day of Service - A Day On, Not a Day Off The 2022 MLK Day of Service, organized by Volunteer Arlington, was a wonderful outpouring of community support and volunteerism. AHC participated in several different ways. We are grateful to be part of such a generous community. Our activities included a partnership with the Arlington Rotary Club to create snuggly blankets for youth. Thanks to lots of individuals and groups such as the Lutheran College Washington Semester, Wakefield High Interact Club, and teens in the Impel Your Life program (pictured above), 290 blankets were distributed to AHC and Bridges to Independence youth. We also appreciate the 65 individuals and groups who made more than 1,635 "study" snack bags for AHC teens. The bags include 3 healthy snacks and are decorated with fun messages and drawings. As part of the days' "Listen and Learn" series, AHC's Volunteer Coordinator, Laura Jackson, joined the Alliance for Housing Solutions and APAH to discuss current issues in affordable housing. Watch here. Thanks to all who celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by making the holiday a day of service! Resident Services Recognized Nationally & Locally CORES Certification We are proud to announce that AHC's Resident Services program has earned the Certified Organization for Resident Engagement & Services (CORES) Certification. The national certification program recognizes organizations with a proven track record of providing quality resident services coordination in affordable rental housing. Achieving CORES Certification recognizes AHC's commitment to the highest standards for resident services, a deep commitment to resident health and well-being, and data-informed operations and decision making. COVID-19 Community Hero Our Resident Services team was recognized in Arlington as a COVID-19 Hero for Outstanding Community Service along with 77 other residents, community groups, and businesses for making "significant impact in the fight against the effects of the pandemic." AHC's COVID efforts have included food distribution, rent relief ($11 million as of the end of 2021!), and more. We are honored and proud to be part of such an amazing, caring community! Watch video celebrating community heroes Waterfront Station II Breaks Ground! Waterfront Station II is underway! The innovative mixed-income, mixed-use project in Southwest Washington, DC, will include 450 homes, including 136 apartments (about 30% of the total units) that will be deeply affordable and available to households earning less than 50% of the area median income (AMI). Half of those will be set aside for households earning less than 30% of AMI. The $170 million project was strategically developed so the market units help subsidize the affordable apartments. The development team is a joint venture among Hoffman & Associates, AHC, City Partners and Paramount Development. Construction is slated for completion by winter 2023. Specific priorities include strategically amplifying resident voices and enhancing strong relationships with local government and community partners. Affordable, stable housing is the foundation for healthy families, individuals, and communities – increasingly critical in today’s challenging world of an ongoing pandemic and challenging economy.
