Fatherly

Decisions are a part of life. But when you become a parent? It feels like they fly at you like high-speed Tetris pieces. Should we have another child? Do we think this is our forever home? What daycare is the right one for us? What if we move closer to my parents? We do all that we can to assemble those pieces into a smooth line, but it’s tough. Some advice: No matter the choice you’re facing, one of the most important steps is to make the best one for you and your unique circumstances. And you can only do that if you have a keen sense of your values and priorities.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Need to Make a Big Decision? Memorize This Method
To combat the psychological biases that tend to rule our decision-making, academics and best-selling authors Chip and Dan Heath created the WRAP method. The step-by-step process helps clear the internal noise that impedes our decisions. It stands for:

Widen your options
Reality-test your assumptions
Attain distance before deciding
Prepare to be wrong

So, what does it all mean? Well, we tend to look at decisions from one or two points of view; widening options is a reminder to not do that and escape our comfort zone. Reality testing is a way of combating the confirmation bias lurking right in front of us and is intended to help us not just go with our gut feeling. Attaining distance reminds us to think about how we might feel about a decision 10 days, 10 months, or even 10 years down the road. As for preparing to be wrong? That’s about considering outcomes. It’s asking, ‘If X part of this decision goes wrong, what’s the worst that could happen?’

At the very least the WRAP Method will get you asking the right questions. Here’s how it works.
