Dear John -
I have exciting news to share with you after a very busy week in the Michigan legislature.

Two of our bills PASSED the Michigan House - an extra challenge especially while working in the minority.

First - our distracted driving bill passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan support. My bill was part of a set of bill packages that would make it safer when it comes to using your phone while driving.  These bills would require that all phone calls be hands free while driving and prohibit drivers from posting on social media, watching Netflix and broadcasting Zoom while driving. This is an important step forward as we see car accidents and fatalities result from using your phone while driving. This bill is now on its way to the State Senate for debate.

I spoke with Robin Murdoch at Fox 2 about our distracted driving bills. Click on the photo of me above to watch the interview!

Next - our first-time homebuyers saving account bill also passed the House and Senate with overwhelming support and is now on it’s way to the Governor's desk for her signature! My bill - House Bill 4290 - would allow for income tax deductions of up to $5,000 for single filers or $10,000 for joint filers on contributions made into an account that is designated solely as a first-time home buyer savings account. Homeownership is out of reach for too many Michiganders and my bill takes an important step to make it easier to save for a home.

Advancing legislation and advocating for our community is what public service is all about. I hope we will continue to share our successes with each other throughout the year.

Sincerely,
Rep. Mari Manoogian
