As Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announces his retirement, I’m clear-eyed about the stakes we currently face.

Right now, Senate Republicans and their dark money donors are plotting how to deploy massive financial resources to attack and smear my Democratic Senate colleagues in their states during this confirmation fight.

In Georgia, Arizona, New Hampshire, Nevada, and elsewhere, special interest groups and GOP operatives will put a spotlight on the Supreme Court to hammer Democrats over the airwaves and drive down their polling numbers. Their goal: Put Mitch McConnell back in charge of the Senate majority and prevent President Biden from making any more progress.

McConnell has spent years bending the Supreme Court to his will — denying President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland so much as a confirmation hearing for 8 months and confirming Amy Coney Barrett a mere 8 days from an election that Donald Trump lost with over 60 million votes already cast.
