Justice Breyer just announced his retirement from the Supreme Court. That means Democrats have an opportunity to appoint a successor who could serve for several decades to come.

This is a pretty big deal.

But more importantly, Justice Breyer’s retirement also reminds us why elections are important.

Senator McConnell has repeatedly ignored tradition and broken Senate precedent to pack the court — first, he used a nonexistent Senate rule to block Merrick Garland eight months before an election, only to rush through procedurals steps to confirm Amy Coney Barrett just days before the 2020 election.

Here’s the bottom line: We can’t let McConnell, Sen. Kennedy, or any other selfish politician stand in the way of progress. Democrats must work together to quickly confirm a Justice who will defend our democracy and protect voting rights. ​
