CNN: “VOTING RIGHTS BILL FAILS IN THE SENATE”
Friend, this is a long email explaining what happened in the Senate this week.
If you don’t have time to read the whole thing, I ask that you chip in $15 to support our efforts to expand our Democratic Majority so we can continue the fight for voting rights.
Late Wednesday night, Senate Democrats brought to the floor a vote that would combine key provisions of both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
If passed, this new bill would have made Election Day a federal holiday, set national standards for voting by mail, restored requirements that force states to receive federal approval for any electoral changes that could harm minority voters, and so much more.
It would’ve been an incredible development in the protection of our right to vote, Friend.
Yet I watched in utter disappointment as our Senators failed to pass this critical legislation -- all because of the filibuster.
We all know it, Friend: The filibuster is the last standing obstacle in the way of Democrats passing voter protection legislation.
And it’s so devastating to see even members of our Democratic Party refuse to acknowledge how necessary it is to get rid of this outdated policy to protect the voices of minority voters in our democracy.
I know how much every vote matters. I lost my race for Congress in 2020 by just 1,522 votes.
That’s why I’m doing my part to elect more Democrats on the ground right here in California and across the country -- but I need you with me.
I’m calling on 500 grassroots Democrats to stand up, fund our voter registration efforts, and be a part of the solution on expanding voting rights.
