This past week was another week of Mayor LaToya Cantrell making progress on a multitude of fronts in the City of New Orleans. Here are some of the highlights:
** Free COVID-19 Tests

The U.S. Postal Service is taking orders for sets of 4 FREE at-home rapid COVID-19 tests per residential household. Orders will be shipped for free in late January. Learn more at special.usps.com/testkits ([link removed]) .

** Workforce Development

On January 13th, Mayor LaToya Cantrell joined Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates and Delta Regional Authority Chairwoman Leslie Durham to announce $1.9 million in regional investments awarded through the Delta Workforce Grant Program to address the employment and training needs of the local and regional workforce. GNO, Inc. Development Foundation and New Orleans Technical Education Provider (NOTEP) each received a $200,000 grant.
** Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2022

This MLK Day, Mayor Cantrell and theCcity of New Orleans' Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Planning Commission hosted a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the holiday and renew the city's commitment to the teachings of Dr. King.
"What I want to ask of the residents of the City of New Orleans is to uplift the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Let's focus ourselves on how we can lift up justice where we live, amongst ourselves, amongst our own people, amongst our own children, amongst our own families. This is what we need to do right here and right now," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
** Millions for Infrastructure

Louisiana is set to receive approximately $1 billion to improve bridges over five years, with $202.6 million to come to the state this year.
"The need for action in Louisiana is clear, and recently released state-level data demonstrates that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will deliver for Louisiana," said Mayor Cantrell.
The Infrastructure Investments and Job Act was signed by President Joe Biden at the end of 2021 and will bring nearly $6 billion total to the state to improve infrastructure.

** NOPD Promotions

This past week, five officers were promoted, continuing their path of career advancement within the New Orleans Police Department: 1 Captain, 1 Lieutenant, and 3 Sergeants.
Quick facts about improving public safety in New Orleans:
* NOPD promoted over 40 officers and initiated approximately 160 promotions in 2021.
* 16 additional Captains were promoted for the first time since Hurricane Katrina.
* New Orleans has invested $34 million in programs to help reduce violent crime.
** Christmas Trees Rebuilding the Coast

The city of New Orleans, in collaboration with an array of partners, recycles Christmas trees each year in an effort to continue restoring and protecting Louisiana's coastline.
To recycle your tree, simply remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and other decorations and place your tree curbside. Only natural trees can be recycled. Artificial trees will be collected as garbage.
