![]() Join us Saturday, Jan. 22 at 10 am as we address growing concerns over renters getting priced out of California, or onto the streets, under the state’s current approach to housing — and the need for AB 854.
Meet Sarah Abdeshahian, a state organizer for housing and tenant issues at the non-profit San Francisco-based Tenderloin Housing Clinic. Sarah will discuss long efforts by renter organizations to reduce the impact of the Ellis Act on the working poor and elderly in California and how AB 854 will help.
Leaders in the State Capitol have not funded even a fraction of the cost to build affordable rental housing to meet the skyrocketing need. We’ve been critics of the “supply” philosophy in Sacramento and among some media — the notion that lots of new luxury housing, often built where affordable housing stands in the way, will “trickle down” to the elderly and low-income.
We’ve seen this failing philosophy in the Capitol play out since 2011, when Jerry Brown defunded the key affordable housing program in California, and housing misery grew.
With AB 854, the legislature has a chance to plug one hole in California’s leaking bucket.
By passing AB 854, legislators can make it harder for market-rate developers to buy and empty a building of low-income and elderly renters, to create yet another posh, high-security building with $2,000 refrigerators.
We’ll hear from Livable California board member Isaiah Madison, an urban planner based in Los Angeles, who will give a young planner’s view of how the Ellis Act is harming the most vulnerable in California.
