Dear John, Today may be the day the Senate decides whether we continue advancing toward “a more perfect union” or it allows a retreat from democracy. The Senate today is expected to take up House passed bill combining the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. These measures are aimed at countering moves by 19 states last year and possible new efforts this year to limit voting and potentially make the counting of votes more partisan. The connection between our freedom to vote for our government and the freedom of our markets and our economy couldn’t be clearer. That’s why the American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) and our allies have actively advocated for passage of these two voting rights measures. We need business leaders to demonstrate their support NOW for protecting our freedom to vote, to prevent the silencing of some American voices, especially women and people of color, and to preserve our democracy. Twice last year, Senate filibuster rules were used to block even beginning debate on these measures. That is why ASBN also supports reforming those rules, a move that Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) has promised to bring to the full Senate if filibuster rules are used again to block these measures. As representatives of the business community, we must urge the Senate to pass the voting rights bill and act to reform Senate filibuster rules in order to do so, and we must do so TODAY.
