Dear John,

I hope you are having a happy and meaningful MLK Day. As we take a moment to honor Dr. King’s legacy, let's also reflect on Dr. King’s methods of making change and how we can all take action in the year ahead.

The King Philosophy of change reflects these methods and is more relevant than ever. The way that Dr. King built diverse coalitions to advance human rights, justice, and opportunity should inspire us all. I’ve spent years studying this approach—it helped spark the organization I founded, the Millennial Action Project, and this campaign for the U.S. Senate.

A couple of years ago, I had the honor of hosting Martin Luther King III at a conference of young legislators. During the conversation, we broke down the ‘6 Steps of the King Philosophy,’ [[link removed]] and I wanted to share it with you. I believe it’s a potent roadmap for creating change—from our local communities to the U.S Senate.

Be deliberate in gathering all the facts
1. Educate your community
2. Strategize your path to change
3. Negotiate what you aim to achieve
4. Engage in direct action
5. Reconcile your differences

By taking these steps, we will be able to move legislation on civil rights, economic opportunity for all, voting rights, and more.

In solidarity,
Steven

For too long, powerful forces have divided us against each other and left our most vulnerable communities behind. Help us build a new, more inclusive, and compassionate path forward for Wisconsin and our country, one that champions dignity for all.
