Today, as we commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it’s
important we not only recognize the critical work he did to advance
equality in the United States.
To honor his legacy means to continue fighting for the future he
envisioned.
A future where no one dies because of lack of access to health care. Where
it’s not just the billionaires who have money in their pockets and a
gainful life. Where poverty is a thing of the past. Where the color of
your skin doesn’t determine your chances of encountering violence at the
hands of law enforcement. A future where all of our voices count in our
elections.
But as we’ve seen this week, this future is at risk because Senators like
Rand Paul are proudly using the Jim Crow filibuster to obstruct
legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and urgently needed
voting rights protections.
This fight is personal for me.
A couple of years ago, I stood on the floor of the Kentucky State House
and told a story about my Grandad. When he was growing up in the South,
the poll workers used to make him guess how many beans were in a jar
before they allowed him to vote. And so he didn’t.
The only thing that stopped those Jim Crow voter suppression laws was the
Voting Rights Act of 1965. But ever since the Supreme Court gutted it in
2013, we’ve seen the same sort of attempts to undermine our ability to be
heard at the ballot box.
So now, we have two choices:
* We allow corrupt politicians like Rand Paul to continue to stand in
the way of progress.
* Or we elect a leader who will proudly fight for the change we need to
achieve Dr. King’s vision for our country.
I know what choice I’m making and I hope you’ll rise up with me this
election as we embark in this work.
Voting rights for all, no less.
Charles
P.S. We’re a people-powered campaign. We don’t accept a single cent from
corporate PACs or special interests. [ [link removed] ]If you want to support our work
this year to replace Rand Paul and expand our majority in the Senate, even
giving $5 makes a huge difference. Thank you.
