John,

I hope you’re having a resolute and reflective Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to justice, freedom, and equity. These values that he fought for, marched for, and was often imprisoned for are still not realized today.

Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania are quick to quote Dr. King to deny their racist attitudes and actions while passing policies that harm the Black community and shut out Black voters from the polls. Hell, they tried to throw out votes from my district in 2020’s election and just last year one of our very own school districts tried to ban Dr. King’s biography under the guise of anti-racism.

It's shameful, John.

To truly respect and live Dr. King’s work, we must follow in his footsteps. We have to fully fund our public schools so children from all backgrounds can grow, learn, and gain equitable opportunities. We have to amend our broken criminal justice system. And we have to prioritize economic justice.

All of this takes work and commitment and our fight is far from over, especially here in Pennsylvania. Right now, there’s a bill sitting in the U.S. Senate called the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act that will make Election Day a holiday, reverse recent GOP voter restrictions, and affirm voting rights into law.

Passing this bill is critical for Pennsylvanians especially after the numerous attempts to stifle voting rights here in the Commonwealth. Please join me in supporting the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and sign your name today.
