Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life fighting for civil rights. In a time of deep division and oppression, the civil rights movement he took part in strengthened our democracy and advanced the right to vote for all people.
But last year, on January 6, extremists like Steve Bannon, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Donald Trump, and the Treason Caucus attempted to erase millions of votes in a free and fair election. Their attempt to subvert our democracy was a direct attack on the rights and values that Dr. King fought for and the legacy he left behind.
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we must honor his memory by standing up for the right of the people to be heard. As Dr. King said, "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability." We can't let insurrectionists erase the civil rights that leaders like Dr. King fought for and we can't be complacent in the face of lies.
