John,
Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Right now, millions of folks throughout the country are volunteering in their communities in honor of Dr. King and his commitment to service.
We should take special care to remember Dr. King’s leadership in the fight for federal voting rights. He advocated for a more just country by securing the fundamental right of Black citizens to vote.
Nearly 54 years after Dr. King’s death, our democracy faces its greatest test since Jim Crow, and the fight for voting rights lives on. As Republicans desperately try to seize power through voter suppression and election subversion, they have introduced over 400 voter suppression bills in state houses across the country. They’re working overtime to disenfranchise millions of Black and brown voters - unless we stop them.
That’s why, last weekend, I was honored to join Dr. King’s family in Arizona where we marched together in support of the fundamental right to vote. As I stood alongside his family, it was clear that the best way to truly honor Dr. King’s legacy is for Congress to pass voting rights legislation once and for all.
Standing together, we called on the Senate to reform the filibuster and pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act without delay.
When it came to fighting for multiracial democracy, Dr. King never gave up. And neither will we.
Yours in the Struggle,
Mondaire
