For the last several years, the nation has watched while Republicans in state legislatures across the country passed laws designed to make it harder for young people, poor people, immigrants, and communities of color to vote.

We watched while a sitting president spun conspiracy theories about who won the 2020 presidential election, attempted to disenfranchise the more than 80 million Americans who voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and incited a deadly riot at the Capitol.

And we’re watching now as many Republican candidates -- funded and encouraged by those who still believe in Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” -- are running for key election positions like Secretary of State so they can decide which votes count and which don’t.

We’re not powerless to stop this. The Senate has been talking about passing comprehensive voting rights legislation for far too long. It’s time to act, now.

Millions of Americans are rightly losing confidence that our electoral system is fair. And our democracy cannot survive without that confidence.

But here’s what I know: We’ve got a much better shot of getting voting rights legislation through if there is enormous grassroots support and pressure from people like you. So today, as people around the country are preparing to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, I’m asking you to add your name as a sign of support for passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. We’ve seen attacks on voting rights throughout our history. But now, with certain state legislatures seeking direct power over the certification of election results, it’s clear we’re facing something different: a direct threat to the legitimacy of our democracy.

This is a violation of everything Dr. King and John Lewis stood for.

The day of decision is upon us and we must act. The stakes are too high and the moment is too meaningful to allow for any evasion.

I am committed to doing everything in my power to get this done.
