John,

Today is a very special day: it is Founders Day for my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. Delta is a historically Black, service-focused sorority through which I have learned so much and gained so many opportunities to help folks in my community.

In fact, it was at a Delta-organized event in 2017 that I first knew I had to get involved in politics.

The annual event, called Delta Days at the Nation’s Capitol, provides an opportunity for members to take an active role in the advocacy and legislative process. I was looking forward to speaking with my elected representatives about the issues that affected me as a constituent.

But guess what? Not a single representative held their appointment to meet with me. This told me that they did not value their constituents and forgot where they came from and who they worked for.

It was then that I realized I would have to forge my own path in politics and be the change I want to see. Without this opportunity from Delta, I would never have gotten involved in politics, let alone considered running for office.

One of the main values and pillars of Delta is a commitment to public service, and being part of a community of Black women who value public service as much as I do is an incredible gift. Through Delta, I am honored to be connected to past member Shirley Chisholm, who made history as the first Black woman to ever serve in the United States House of Representatives. I hope to continue her legacy by becoming the first Black Congresswoman from Nebraska.

In honor of Delta Founders Day, celebrating the founding of the organization in 1913, I’m hoping you can invest $19.13 in my campaign to become Nebraska’s first Black Congresswoman.

Anything you can spare means so much to my team and me.

Thank you,
