There are a million ways for any one conversation to go off the rails. But every single one of them has something in common: The tone. If you stop thinking about what you say and focus on the way you say it, chances are you’ll have fewer arguments or misunderstandings. Furthermore, paying attention to your tone will help you uncover how you really feel. Because if you’re in a fury, yelling across the house, “I’m only yelling because I love you!” — trust us when we say that no one in the fight really believes this.

Is Your Partner’s Stress Getting the Best of You?

If you feel like you’re just a receptacle for your partner’s stress, it can become almost impossible to feel empathy or any kind of understanding. The solution, says couples therapist Elizabeth Earnshaw, is co-regulation. This happens, she says, when one person shares their stress and in response the other person soothes their own body in order to stay calm in the presence of their partner. “You can do so much for your loved one when you learn how to tend to those physical symptoms within yourself,” says Earnshaw. “The amazing thing about partnership is that when you keep your body calm it can actually help your partner to keep their body calm, too.”

Stress is just one hurdle couples are confronting right now. Here are a few others — and therapist’s advice for clearing them.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Four Ways to Not Transfer Your Anxiety to a Child

  1. Don’t mask or hide your fears. Kids will pick up on them anyway. Instead, display confidence when talking about what scares you.

  2. Listen to their worries. Help children externalize their fears.

  3. Model coping behaviors for your children. Show them that some anxiety is normal and that there are ways of overcoming it.

  4. Allow your child to experience fear and worry. Help her develop tools to deal with them.

Here’s some more advice about dealing with stress around children.
