Dear Ward 8 Residents:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became synonymous with nonviolence, peace, race, and social justice reform. Commemorating his legacy is a tradition that I not only look forward to at the annual peace walk, but a legacy I carry close to my heart when serving District residents, each and everyday.

On Monday, January 17th, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I look forward to joining hundreds of residents to peace walk the two-mile walk along MLK Ave SE in Ward 8.

We will assemble at 8:3 am at the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and make our way across the bridge, starting at 10am. Parking is available on 13th Street SE & Good Hope Road SE. Shuttles will start pick-up at 8:30am to 10am and drop-off peace walkers on 1st Street SW near the bridge. We will continue to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols. Masks and social distancing are required.

Please register to walk with me to commemorate Dr.King by visiting https://walkwithtray.eventbrite.com. Hats and masks are available to the first 100 people that assemble to walk with me at the bridge. For more information, please contact my office at 202-724-8045.

Peace and love,

Councilmember Trayon White, Sr.

Councilmember Trayon White calls on DCRA to respond to private property damage amid issues rising from the adjacent construction site.

On January 5th, Councilmember Trayon White responded to an emergency call about a home-based property on Good Hope Road SE experiencing foundational shifting due to an adjacent construction site.

Owner James Hutchinson from @incarcerated_lives_matter_ent uses the property to house returning citizens. These residents are now displaced due to structural damage making it unsafe to return.

The Virginia-based construction firm is developing a 34-unit multi-family building. Owners are citing the structural damage as the construction firm failing to fortify a promised connecting wall.

DCRA is aware of the issue and is working to rectify the concerns. In addition, our office will monitor the matter to ensure injured parties are made whole.

After a herculean effort to get D.C. kids tested ahead of their return to school this week — for all of one day, thanks to winter weather — the District said it isn’t planning to test them again ahead of their second return Monday.

At least one D.C. Council member raised significant concerns about the plan.

“How are we tracking to see who is negative and who is positive on Monday morning?” said Trayon White, who represents Ward 8 on the council, during a Friday call.

City Administrator Kevin Donahue said they’re not.
