Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

We are marching into 2022 with rested minds, full hearts, and hopeful spirits! This will be the year of exciting movement in regards to local and national plastic pollution policy, brand new scientific research, and increased 5 Gyres ambassador engagement.

Thanks to you and your support, we raised nearly $300,000 that will directly support our education, science, advocacy, ambassador, and TrashBlitz programming in order to further our mission of eradicating plastic pollution at the source.

You have shown us that you want a sustainable future, starting NOW. So, let’s get to work.

Why PHA? An Update on Our Study
There is a race to replace fossil fuel-based plastics with better alternatives, and 5 Gyres remains at the forefront of science research to study the long-term impact of these materials in the environment. PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) has received a lot of attention lately. Many PHA producers and companies claim that it is biodegradable, but is it really?

We are in the middle of an 18-month study to determine the degradability of PHA. Dr. Marcus Eriksen and his team of researchers are monitoring PHA plastic samples buried in terrestrial and aquatic environments in California, Maine, and Florida.

As we work to influence policy makers and industry with our philosophy of science-to-solutions, it's our mission to empower the public with information on the issue to make responsible choices.
