John,
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since we watched violent insurrectionists attack our nation’s capital. Like you, I remember watching the news in shock, talking with my friends and family with the same question being asked over and over again: How could this happen in our country?
But the more we dissect the events of January 6th, 2021, the more we realize that our democracy is more precarious than we know. And the people putting our democracy in danger by sewing division and doubt were led by Donald Trump and his cronies in his corrupt regime — the very people who took an oath to us to protect our democracy above all else.
And what was even more concerning to learn is that Montana sent more insurrectionists per capita than any other state in our Union – by nearly 1.5 times the next closest state.
We have got to stay true to our values as Montanans and Americans. We have got to hold the insurrectionists and the corrupt politicians who profit off their delusions accountable for what they’ve done.
It’s not going to be an easy task, John. The same out of touch right-wing extremists who led us to the events of January 6th, 2021 are still operating without any real accountability – and their power will grow if we don’t come together to stop it. And one of the people behind the far-right’s quest to unravel our democracy is California’s own Ryan Zinke, currently running against us in Montana.
Zinke has remained notably silent when it comes to the insurrection. Why? Because he wants voters to forget he was one of Trump’s staunchest, most corrupt, and most vocal allies in the former Administration – and he will go straight back to doing Trump’s dirty work if he makes it back to Washington.
So while the wounds our democracy and our communities suffered one year ago today will not heal easily, I know we *can* heal them if we come together to defeat these evil forces. Here in Montana, we can do our part by defeating Ryan Zinke this November.
How about you? What do you think it will take to heal the wounds of January 6, 2021? Share your thoughts with me on Facebook – and I’ll personally reply to every good-faith comment that comes in in the next 24 hours.
Thank you so much for being on this team — and thanks for everything you do to show you believe our democracy is worth defending.
Best,
Tom
