One year ago, our democracy came under attack when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington. D.C. in an attempt to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.
These actions were a coordinated violent attack that led to over 100 police officers suffering injuries and at least five deaths overall, including an officer.
A year later, it is important to remember that we are not out of the woods. As Frank Sharry wrote today, “the story of the threats to our democracy cannot be fully understood without recognizing the central role played by immigration in the radicalization of the GOP.”
The attack at the Capitol was an attack on our democracy motivated by the white nationalist ”replacement theory,” a racist conspiracy theory that holds that non-white migrants bring disease, crime, and are a threat to democracy. This twisted fiction sent a mob to the capital in a deadly attempt to overturn the democratic will of a multi-racial majority.
These same ideas led white supremacists to attack the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 and a Walmart in El Paso in 2019. And GOP leaders like Elise Stefanik (R-NY) continue to use it for profit and power.

Attacks rooted in white supremacy are far too common in this country and must be stopped.
The Republican members of Congress that supported the insurrection a year ago or who have turned blind eye since, must be held accountable. Additionally, Democrats must use their political power to take on the challenge of fighting for an expansive democracy that is unabashedly pro-immigrant.
The fight for our democracy is a fight for a vision of America that is inclusive, renewing and expanding to new participants - including immigrants.
We cannot let the authoritarian and white nationalist ideas that drove the insurrection, to permeate those who hold elected office. We must pressure Democrats to protect the health of our democracy by passing legislation on voting rights and those that make our country more inclusive such as immigration reform.
Together, we have the power to hold those responsible for encouraging the attack on the Capitol and ensure that something like that doesn’t happen ever again.
