Republicans want to control who gets to vote. Will you let them?

John,

Did you watch Merrick Garland’s speech yesterday? I did. I was glad to hear him say that the DOJ has “no higher priority” than to bring the folks responsible for the deadly January 6 coup attempt to justice, no matter how high up in the government they were or still are. Let’s hope that means the Trump crime family and the Congressional Treason Caucus all wind up in prison.

But a lot of people missed something really important about Garland’s speech, and that’s the way he drew a direct line between the coup attempt a year ago today and subsequent efforts by the GQP to suppress voting rights for millions of Americans, especially Black Americans.

That’s what I want to talk to you about today, because even though we’ve managed to keep our democracy going for another year, it’s by no means guaranteed we get to keep it.

The fact is, in the past year, 52 separate laws have been passed to make it harder for Americans to vote.

Here are some examples:

  • Arizona will now automatically deregister you as an absentee voter if you miss two elections in a row.

  • Alabama has banned curbside voting for disabled and immune-compromised voters.

  • Arkansas will prohibit people from being within 100 feet of a polling place except for the purpose of casting a vote, preventing the delivery of food or water to voters stuck in long lines.

  • Kentucky will no longer allow hand-delivery of absentee ballots by anyone but a voter’s “family member, roommate, or caregiver,” leaving people who live alone and far from their families at a disadvantage.

  • Other states have shortened voting hours, closed polling places, purged eligible voters from the rolls, and made it harder to register to vote.

These are just a handful of the restrictive voting laws that have already been passed. Hundreds more have been introduced. The GQP’s endgame is very clear: They only want you voting if you’re white, able-bodied, and wealthy enough to take time off work, drive long distances, and stand in line for hours to vote.

The only way to stop this is for the Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would put limits on what states can do to restrict voting rights, especially when the restrictions disproportionately impact racial minorities or other marginalized groups.

The problem is, even with a Democratic majority, they can’t do it – the Republicans will simply kill it with a filibuster.

That’s just one of many reasons the upcoming midterms are so important.

If we can flip just a handful of Republican seats this November and hold on to the House, the Voting Rights Act will sail through Congress for President Biden’s signature, throwing a massive wrench in the GQP’s plan to disenfranchise minority voters.

No Dem Left Behind PAC has a plan to do exactly that, by targeting every winnable Republican seat in the Senate and helping the best Democratic challengers energize not just their urban base, but oft-neglected rural voters.

The data show again and again that Democrats NEED rural voters in order to win these closely contested races.  So, No Dem Left Behind is going to do what we do best: Reach those rural voters with the right messages and the right messenger to turn them out this November.

But we can’t do any of this without support from folks like you.
