Dear John,
A year ago, we watched in horror as extremists tried to subvert the will of the American people and attempted to prevent democratically elected leaders from taking office. Their coup may have failed—but it didn’t deter them from escalating their attacks on our democracy and fundamental freedoms.
That’s why, today at 4:30 pm, NARAL Pro-Choice America is joining partners for a candlelight vigil in front of the U.S. Capitol to remember the attack on our democracy one year ago and call for action to protect our democracy and freedom to vote. Will you join us? [[link removed]]
In 2021 alone, Republican lawmakers in 19 states passed 33 laws restricting the right to vote. And more laws restricting our right to vote are likely to come if the U.S. Senate fails to pass voter protections. It’s no secret that the same state legislators attacking voting rights also support dangerous restrictions on reproductive freedom and abortion access. They’re laser-focused on dismantling our democracy, all while upholding and promoting white supremacy.
Join us outside of the Capitol Building one year after the January 6 attack for a peaceful, candlelight vigil to remember this infamous day when our democracy was attacked and to call for legislation to protect our democracy. [[link removed]]
We will demand the U.S. Senate do everything in its power to protect and strengthen our democracy and call on Senators to pass:
The Freedom to Vote Act, the most significant voting rights and anti-corruption bill in generations, which will protect the freedom to vote for all Americans, stop partisan gerrymandering, limit the influence of dark money so that billionaires can’t buy elections, and prevent partisan politicians from sabotaging future elections.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will restore and strengthen our freedom to vote by making sure any changes to voting rules that could discriminate against voters based on our race or background are federally reviewed, so we all have an equal say in our future, and our rights are protected.
The Protecting Our Democracy Act, a historic pro-democracy-for-all package, which will create and strengthen guardrails to prevent the abuse of presidential power and restore fundamental checks and balances in our government.
DC Statehood, which will provide equal voice to the over 700,000 residents of Washington, DC and end more than 200 years of taxation without representation.
The anti-choice movement knows they can’t win on the merits of their unpopular policies, so they attack the right to vote itself by creating barriers that make it harder for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and all people, to vote.
Our freedom to vote is critical to electing leaders who share and will represent the values of the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion.
Together we can protect our freedom to vote. Please RSVP now if you have not already! [[link removed]]
