Thank you for helping us achieve a year of incredible progress…

Dear John

As one year ends and a new year full of possibilities emerges, we often find ourselves reflecting on what’s most important; to our families, to our communities, and ourselves. Of course, 2021 is no exception, and the work that we do to help make the world a more equal place for women and girls is always at the forefront of our minds.

Today, we take this opportunity to share with you what gender equality means to some of our wonderful staff around the world, in their own words.

“…Having more women in leadership positions, ensuring that the law treats men and women equally in all aspects in every country, and women and girls able to speak out about instances of sexual violence/abuse and access justice without fear of stigma, backlash or intimidation.”

—Divya Srinivasan, Legal Adviser and South Asia Consultant, New Delhi India

“…That everyone, regardless of their gender, can fully exercise their rights…access opportunities, information, and engage in both online and offline spaces without being discriminated against, exploited, or abused.”

– Amanda Manyame, Digital Rights and Law Adviser, Johannesburg, South Africa

“Women being perceived as credible as men and of equal value to men by the justice system.”

—Tamar Dekanosidze, Eurasia Regional Representative, Tbilisi, Georgia

“…That every women and girl no matter who they are, where they were born, what they look like, what their race, ethnicity, caste, socio-economic group, culture, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality status or disability may be, realizes the full enjoyment of their human rights.”

— Jorie Dugan, Legal Adviser, New York, NY, US

“A world where the women and girls in the south…can have the same opportunities and achieve the same dreams that the women in the north.”

— Barbara Jimenez Santiago, Americas Regional Coordinator, Washington, D.C., US

“It means rights, opportunities, and access to society are not different based on gender and [women and girls’] different needs and dreams are valued equally…"

— Edith Kalela, Grants Coordinator, Africa, Nairobi, Kenya

“I will be giving birth to my daughter in 2022 and taking care of her for most of the year…that’s an area where women’s rights and gender equality is so important…Nondiscrimination of mothers in the workplace benefits everyone; me, my daughter and everyone else…which is why the work [we] do is so important.”

— Claire Dupuy, Office Manager, Europe Office, London, UK
