A Pennsylvania native, I was born to teenage parents who were just starting out on their own. I watched as my dad worked nights and weekends to put himself through college and provide for his family.
When I was 23 years old, I joined Big Brothers/Big Sisters, which completely changed my life. My "little" was an 8 year old boy who recently lost his father and whose mother was also sick. Before she passed, I promised her that I'd continue to look after her son and make sure that he graduated from college.
After making good on that promise, I wanted to do more. So I joined AmeriCorps and helped set up some of the first computer labs in the neighborhood and also taught GED classes to young mothers and fathers.
Ensuring that everyone has the tools and resources to succeed is something I've always been passionate about since watching my parents work hard to build a future for our family at a young age.
When the town of Braddock, PA was one of the poorest and most challenged communities in the commonwealth, I decided to start a GED program there. And in 2005, my students encouraged me to run for mayor -- which I have proudly served as for 13 years now.
Through my time as mayor of Braddock, I've worked hard to rebuild my community, creating jobs and opportunities, getting youth engaged, and bringing creative urban policy solutions.
I've always championed bold legislation when others have been too hesitant to stand up for what's right. I supported legalizing marijuana before it was popular, officiated same-sex marriage before it was legal, and pushed for single payer healthcare long before it was mainstream.
Unlike other politicians who have merely taken up these issues as talking points, these are the same causes I've fought for over the last two decades. And these are the issues I will continue to fight for when I make it to the Senate.
I'm bringing a fresh approach to the Capitol because it's time to level the playing field. Americans deserve a government that works for ALL, not just for the rich and powerful. And I'm proud to have NDLB in this fight with me to ensure that nobody is left behind.

Our Democratic Senate majority is slim, and Republicans know it. They're targeting swing states like Pennsylvania in hopes of regaining power and pushing their Trumpist agenda on Americans.
We need to protect and expand the Senate from the GQP if we're going to deliver for working people, which means Democrats need to pick up the momentum as we head into 2022. Republicans are outraising us at record numbers, and so I have to ask for your help before we close out this critical final quarter of the year:
