HUW MERRIMAN MP NEWSLETTER
November 2019

General Election

It has been an enormous privilege to have served the residents of Bexhill and Battle constituency since 2015. From today I will no longer be your MP and will be standing in my third election in just 5 years. Read my closing thoughts here:
Huw Visits Hospice in Weald

I was delighted to visit the Cottage Hospice site in Five Ashes, which is due to open later this year. I agree with the team that end of life care should be supported as a natural process rather than a medical one. Read about my visit here:
A21 in Parliament

In my Transport Select Committee I challenged the Chief Executive of Highways England to justify why the new road at Pembury went 50% over budget whilst further south we have communities in need of solutions. Read more here:
All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism

As an officer of the APPG on Autism, I’ve sought to raise awareness in Parliament and around the country.
Our latest inquiry ‘The Autism Act: 10 years on' has made a series of recommendations. I chaired the education section. You can read our report here:

Domestic Abuse Bill

This landmark legislation will help 2 million vulnerable people. I was asked to be one of the 17 MPs on the Bill Committee to scrutinise it. The election has halted progress but all parties have pledged to bring it back.

Visiting Little Common School

Congratulations to the newly elected School Council in Little Common. It was great to visit and exchange ideas about how we can best represent those who put us here.

Parliament Week

This weekly event encourages schools and organisations to engage in activities which explore the relevance of UK Parliament and empowers everyone to have their say. For more details, click here: https://www.ukparliamentweek.org

Brexit Update

Due to a clash with the Rugby World Cup Final, I decided to cancel my public meeting but you can read my latest views around the UK leaving the EU here
Constituents visit Parliament

Last week Penny and Phillip brought along their granddaughter Holly and her friend Maxine, both from Germany, to discuss European politics and have a tour around Westminster.

Supply of Cystic Fibrosis Drugs

On behalf of constituents who lobbied me, I have been lobbying the NHS to provide life-changing cystic fibrosis treatment. We’ve had a breakthrough. Read about it here:
Visiting Ticehurst and Flimwell School

Following their recent tour of Parliament, I joined Years 5 and 6 for a brilliant Q&A session and had my own tour from the School Council team.

Access to Cash I

Battle will soon have its new cash-point. Barclays have given me a guarantee that they will stay in Heathfield and Bexhill for at least two years. Last week I met with the Treasury team to press for longer term nationwide commitments to access cash.

Access to Cash II

Having joined forces with MPs across the divide to pressure Barclays to reverse its decision to stop customers from withdrawing cash from their accounts at the Post Office, the Bank have conceded. You can read more here:
