We will soon post the entire series on our website, in our e-news and on facebook. These webinars will not just provide information but also offer ideas and resources for taking action. All webinars run from noon - 1:15 CST. They are free of charge but registration is required. January 19, 2022 - Darrin Wasniewski, AARP-Wisconsin - Winter Placemaking Darrin Wasniewski, Associate State Director of Community Outreach, will discuss the benefits of winter placemaking and share ideas for communities of all sizes. Wisconsin winters are not for the faint of heart. Snow, ice, cold temperatures, and long hours of darkness are just some of the challenges to active living during the wintertime. However, communities can create opportunities year-round for outdoor activities and active transportation. The concept of “winter placemaking” embraces those challenges to connect people with public spaces during the winter season. Beth will be sharing the findings from Transportation for America’s “Driving Down Emissions” report and the barriers to a more just and equitable society. Highlights include getting onerous government regulations out of the way of providing more homes where people naturally drive less, making safety the top priority for street design to encourage more short trips, and instituting GHG reduction and less driving as goals of the transportation system. We will be tracking them closely and doing our part to provide information and resources to support these important initiatives! And - we'll be offering our own ideas for community led climate planning. Climate Legislation A group of Wisconsin state legislators introduced 22 exciting new climate related bills! Four of these bills are top issues we are advocating for: SB770 – Climate Change Local Planning When local governments prepare comp plans, they must also include consideration for the impacts of climate change. SB765 – Complete Streets WisDOT must consider bikeways and pedestrian paths in all road reconstruction projects funded with state or federal money. 1000 Friends remains a steadfast advocate for complete streets, promoting it through our Active Wisconsin network. SB766 – Long-Range Transportation Planning WisDOT’s long range transportation planning must include a vision for low-carbon public transit, incentives to develop equitable, clean transportation options, and transportation solutions for underserved areas of the state. 1000 Friends continues to push these goals, which align closely with the major policy recommendations from our Blueprint 2050 report. SB769 – Urban Forestry Grants Increase funding for DNR’s urban forestry program designed to mitigate the “urban heat island” effect. 1000 Friends advocates for more urban forestry funding in the state budget recommendations and our recent urban forestry webinar series.
