The holiday season always arrives with a lot of expectations: Visiting with family. Finding the right presents. Getting those cards out in time! There’s so much to do that it can really make “the most wonderful time of the year” feel anything but. And now, COVID is adding to the pressure as well. Here at the Standard, we tried to take some pressure off the hard-working crew that puts each episode together with a (near) week of special programming; below, Mose Buchele has more about our

broadcast of “The Disconnect,” an award-winning podcast that probes the failure of the Texas energy grid last winter. Climate change, infrastructure troubles, an ongoing pandemic and more: I don’t need to tell you 2021 was a rough one, and none of these issues magically resolve themselves at the stroke of midnight on January 1. But hopefully, the impactful journalism we and our partners bring you week in and week out can address issues like these, and point a way to a brighter future. We can’t do any of it without your support either, so in a very real way, you are part of the solution. Yes you! Thanks for listening and growing the Texas Standard newsletter; I hope you enjoy the stories I selected for you this week. (I particularly appreciated the guide to
accessibility over the holidays from our web editor Shelly Brisbin.) Until next time, thanks again and have a restful and healthy winter holiday.

Mose Buchele here, energy and environment reporter for KUT Austin. The days-long blackout of the Texas energy grid represented a failure of infrastructure, oversight, planning and the state’s competitive energy market – an economic decision that’s been a point of pride for many state leaders for over twenty years. To cover and explain such a complex disaster, we knew we needed to take a historic view – and so the idea for

"The Disconnect" was born. The podcast, featuring four core episodes with added bonus content, takes listeners back to the very first days of the Texas grid. In each episode new KUT reporters join me, your host, to describe how decisions made through the generations lead to last February’s massive power failure. It also asks the question: could it happen again? Working on the project with this wildly talented team of KUT journalists has been a new high point of my career. For a subject so tragic and complicated you can still catch that delight in our voices – it’s the joy of uncovering important stories and sharing them with each other and our listeners. I hope you enjoy "The Disconnect," airing through the rest of the week on Texas Standard.
