If your child, partner, or close friend told you they were struggling with something, how would you respond? Odds are, you’d take the time to listen and find a way to show you care. Compassion, or the concern for other people’s misfortune, is an important part of any relationship — and if you’re close with someone, it’s fairly easy to do. But it can be wildly difficult to extend yourself the same grace. This is why that is — and how to cut yourself some slack.

5 Small, Nice Things to Do For Yourself

  • Go for a walk in the most nature-y place you can find.

  • Call a good friend who you haven’t spoken to in a while. Shoot the shit.

  • Create a playlist of all the songs you loved when you were younger but haven’t heard in a while. Listen to them. Introduce them to your kids (if they’re appropriate)

  • Talk about your feelings with someone. No, don’t dump them on your spouse or kids. But be more open about your inner world.

Stay on Target This Holiday Season
General relationship maintenance is easy to overlook around the holidays when you’re running from event to event to whatever else it is you have on your long-as-santa’s-list agenda. But it’s important to stay consistent and carve out time for one another. “Intentionally make a plan for staying connected through the holidays with daily ‘talk time’ and one or two dates per week,” stresses Dr. Wyatt Fisher, a licensed psychologist and marriage counselor in Colorado. Basically, you need to treat the holidays as you do work: set boundaries and realize that quality time spent with your spouse trumps freaking out about seeing those zoo lights.

Here are a few more tips to save your relationship from holiday stress.
