More evidence, less poverty

The image says: "Denuncia - Levantemos nuestra voz en contra de la corrupcion electoral."

The above image translates to: "Report! Let's raise our voice against electoral corruption."

John,

Electoral irregularities—illegal activities seeking to influence elections—threaten democratic institutions in countries around the world. Social media has been used by political parties to influence and manipulate voters, but it also has the potential to help reduce irregularities. In Colombia, where election fraud and vote-buying are common, researchers conducted a randomized evaluation to measure the impact of Facebook ads that encouraged citizens to report irregularities during a mayoral election.

What do you think they found?

  1. The ads increased reporting of irregularities, but didn’t change the likelihood that actual electoral irregularities would occur.
  2. The ads had no impact on reporting or electoral irregularities.
  3. The ads increased reporting and reduced the likelihood that irregularities would occur.
  4. The ads reduced reporting, and had no impact on irregularities.

Without evidence, decision-makers often have to guess the answers to questions like these. IPA works with researchers and our partners to generate evidence on what works, so organizations and governments can make informed decisions.
