This project was started in response to Trump’s election, and the rise of an overtly fascist movement in America, funded by the fossil fuel industry. That's why we started calling Trump and his movement "Fossil Fueled Fascists."

For a long time Very Serious People called us "deranged" or warned us not to exaggerate the threat. But after the insurrection on January 6, 2021, a lot of people changed their tune.

Now, almost 12 months after the attempted coup, the fossil fueled fascist party is on the rise again. And elected leaders from the President on down are failing to act. So, once again, we need to take radical, non violent, direct action to keep democracy and each other safe.

This moment feels a lot like right before the 2020 election: We can see the coup coming, but there's a lot of inertia that wants to trust in leaders to protect us or avoid alarming people in case it all turns out alright on its own.

198 methods was one of the groups warning that Trump would not accept the outcome of the election, and that he'd try to reverse the results through friendly media sources, through rigged legal processes, and if all else failed through violent mobs. As it turned out, we were spot on – but that’s not because we’re especially smart or good at predicting election results: It’s because we’d been treating Trump line a fascist regime for years.

And there's a clear, direct connection between the rise of Trump and his allies, and the fossil fuel industry. To put it succinctly - they paid for it:

Sixty-five fossil fuel companies gave $8.8 million to more than 100 members of Congress who voted to challenge the electoral college outcome. Twenty nine fossil fuel executives contributed more than $18 million to political groups that worked for Trump and his Congressional allies. The biggest beneficiaries were the same ones we now know were most-closely planning the insurrection with Trump and team.

But confronted with the rise of a fascist party funded by fossil fuels, our so-called leaders have acted to reject neither fascism not fossil fuels.

So, what can we hope to do about it? 198 methods organizes radical, uncompromising, anti-fascist, non-violent campaigns that mix direct action and digital tactics. last year we ran more than 60 campaigns - including ones to impeach Trump (again), eject insurrectionist members of Congress, and hold traitors and turn coats like Joe Manchin accountable. Next year, we want to run 198 campaigns - 3 times as many - and focus a lot of them on fighting the return and rise of Trump and his fossil fueled fascist allies.
