If you are like me, the tragic school shooting in Oxford, Michigan has yet again left me wondering "what can I do?". The news of the local shooting at the Streets of Southpoint Shopping Mall in Durham, NC, had just subsided when our screens showed yet another instance of preventable and needless gun violence.
So, what can we do to prevent the next tragedy? One concrete thing we can do is make sure that the existing laws in North Carolina stay in place and we elect the right candidates who will fight for safer communities. This takes staff on the ground to stay up on shifty efforts to erode gun safety laws and inform us all on what we can do. A donation today can help keep our staff funded to stay ready to advocate and respond.
There has been an erosion of good laws in states like Iowa and Texas that keep communities safe. But not here. We did that this year through our work on the ground to sustain Governor Cooper’s veto of the bill to repeal the Pistol Purchase Permitting system.
I started the NCGV Action Fund because we knew our work needed to go further than just education. Everyone in this state deserves to know how their elected officials vote on gun laws. They also need to be held accountable to all citizens of North Carolina, not just the NRA donors. Please join us with a commitment to ending gun violence in North Carolina by ensuring our laws reflect our priorities with a gift today.
We don’t have time to waste.
Sincerely, Wesley McMahon Founder & Past Board President NCGV Action Fund
