Every statewide office in Texas, including every legislative seat and U.S. House district, will be on the ballot next year with new political maps just approved by the Texas Legislature. But that latter assertion depends, of course, on the outcome of challenges to those maps by a number of parties, including the U.S. Justice Department. The DOJ alleges those maps dilute

the political power of people of color and violate the Voting Rights Act. Yet as of this week, the die has been cast for 2022, in at least this regard: the window for filing for candidacy in the primaries is now closed. And what many observers are noting is the large number of Republicans crowding to get on primary ballots compared to the much smaller number of Democrats vying for statewide office. The obvious question: why? Does it reflects a lack of enthusiasm among Texas Democrats? Or a sense of being effectively shut out of competition as a result of redistricting?
