I almost couldn't believe it when I read it.

Nearly one-third of birds in the U.S. and Canada have vanished since 1970, according to a recent study. That's almost 3 billion blackbirds, wood warblers, finches, shorebirds, and other species — dead and gone forever, because of habitat loss, climate change, and other factors.

We're facing an extinction crisis on a massive scale — 1 million species worldwide could disappear if immediate action isn't taken. From birds to polar bears and grizzly bears ... manatees ... gray wolves ... orca whales ... bearded seals ... snowy owls ... rusty patched bumble bees ... elephants ... giraffes ... they all could vanish.

Yet the Trump administration has gutted the Endangered Species Act — rolling back protections that are vital to bringing imperiled species back from the brink of extinction.
