News Flash!! Unpaid internships are outdated and financially discriminatory. Democrats who are supposed to be “pro-labor champions” don’t seem to understand that this core value must extend to their own campaigns and beyond.
Interns are people. Interns pay rent. Interns have phone bills. Interns are workers.
It’s time for every member of congress to get with the program here— ESPECIALLY Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat worth $9M, recently announced that his office would be hiring for their year-round internship program. I’m sure you can gather where this is going…
Gottheimer doesn’t even care to pretend he isn’t slime, because no one is holding him accountable and he thinks his seat is safe…
It’s time for him to GO, and it’s time for our Party to hold him and others like him accountable.
Why are these unpaid internships so egregious?
When someone decides to hire unpaid interns, they are making a decision to leave out a huge portion of hardworking potential employees on the sidelines who simply cannot afford to work without pay. It’s a privilege to have an unpaid internship— to work knowing there is no need to worry about paying for rent or food, to know there is a safety net.
Representatives (especially ones sitting 9 million dollars...) should know better than excluding individuals which further creates less opportunity for young people to pave a life of success.
Established Democrats are clearly out of touch with their party, which is made up of working-class citizens. Gottheimer has opposed many proposals that would uplift his party and help blue collar workers; he worked hard to fight against the Build Back Better Act just to favor his own tax cuts.
It’s time to elect officials who understand the importance of paying people livable wages rather than praising free labor, and sometimes that means standing up to our own elected officials.
